On September 16, the Albanian Parliament adopted a new government programme that identifies the environment as one of its priorities over the next four years.
Within the new government, Fatmir Mediu has been appointed as Minister of Environment, Forestry and Water Administration. Mediu has served as chairman of Albania's Republican Party since 1997, and chaired the Ministry of Defence in the previous government. Born in 1967, she studied at Tirana University's Faculty of Geology and Mines, later working as an oil-extraction engineer.
The Democratic Party of Albania, which heads a right-wing coalition, won the 2009 parliamentary elections in July. Sali Berisha is serving a second consecutive term as prime minister and steers a 15-member government cabinet.
