The government of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has declared Tuesday, March 30 a non-working day in honour of an environmental effort that is becoming something of a national tradition.
'Tree Day: Plant Your Future' was a national afforestation campaign inaugurated on March 12, 2008, when over 150,000 Macedonians planted approximately 2 million trees throughout the country. The movement began as a response to a depleted Forest Fund budget and catastrophic wildfires in summer 2007. Each successive year has resulted in more trees being planted, and campaign organisers hope that up to 7 millions trees will be planted this year.
Katarina Stojkovska, director of REC Country Office Macedonia, said that her office staff will be travelling to Caska Municipality to participate in the tree-planting effort.
