Csongrad dam sparks controversy

Feb. 16, 2009

Greenfo.hu revealed that a feasibility study has been completed for a proposed dam at Csongrad on the Tisza River. According to the study the structure could be built at a cost of HUF 120 billion (EUR 404.8 million). Initial plans for a dam at Csongrad were mooted in the 1970s. Project supporters say the dam is essential in dealing with future impacts from climate change, while nature protection groups oppose its construction on grounds that it will cause substantial environmental harm.
