Hungary avoids GMO threat, for now

A March 1 meeting in Brussels of the Council of Environmental Ministers closed with a reassuring result for Hungary, as the majority voted to maintain the moratorium on growing the Mon810 gene-modified variety of maize. A variety of explanations were given for the decision, which was arrived at with less difficulty than expected, but the move was welcomed by everyone from government representatives to green organisations.

Specialists, however, pointed out that although Mon810 cannot be grown in Hungary, it may still be imported and used, for example, as animal feed.
