Facing stiff opposition from the local population, Vertes Power Plant in north-west Hungary called off its pilot project to generate electricity by burning waste, Greenfo.hu reported.
At a public meeting of the local council held on Thursday 12 March (at which the power station had originally intended to announce an increase in the quantities of refuse incinerated), local residents, some wearing gas masks and dust masks, complained of falling property values and rising cancer rates. After a heated debate lasting three and a half hours, the power plant's CEO Pal Szabo announced that no more waste would be incinerated for as long as he remains in charge of the facility.
