Investor announces 'green town' project

June 1, 2009

Polish investment and development company TUP announced in late May that it would begin construction of a 'green town' this year that would become a new part of Siewierz (pop. 5,000) in Katowice Province.

TUP will carry out the project via an SPV called Chmielowskie, while the investor underlined the new town's environment-friendly features. According to TUP, solutions such as wind power, solar and photovoltaic panels or managing waste so that biomass is produced, will be widely implemented. Rain water will be used to keep the town's green areas from going dry. The project also assumes that town-produced waste will not pollute ground water. The investor hopes to receive some EU funding to help realise environmental solutions envisioned for the project.

The 'green town' project will be similar to ones carried out in the US or in the UK, such as Seaside in Florida, or Poundbury in Dorset, respectively. The Polish 'green town' project is planned to take 25 years to complete, with completion of the first stage expected in 2012.
