Poland short of cash to meet environmental commitments

May 15, 2009

Poland's spending for the environment amounts to approximately PLN 10 billion annually, according to ekoinfo. There will be an extra PLN 2-3 billion available in the coming years. Still, to meet its environmental commitments under the EU membership, Poland will need about PLN 60-65 billion in the next four years. The same amount will be necessary to meet the commitments in the year 2012-16, according to the Polish Environment Ministry. According to the minister of environment, who spoke in Parliment on May 13 about Poland's national environmental strategy, Poland must prioritise its commitments in order to secure financial resources to meet the most important ones. Top priorities include PLN 40 billion for air quality, PLN 70 billion for water management, and PLN 12 billion for waste management.
