Poland’s most energy-efficient communes announced

May 15, 2009

The Polish Association for Energy Efficiency announced the results of a competition to reveal Poland's most energy-efficient 'gmina' (i.e. 'commune', Poland's basic administrative unit). For communes of up to 30,000 people, Kleczew (located in the Poznań region) was named most energy efficient. In the category of communes of 30,000-100,000 people, the winner is Lubin, a south-western town better known as the site for Poland's copper and silver mining in dustry. Finally, among communes of more than 100,000 people, the winner is Bielsko-Biala, a town of close to 200,000 located in the Katowice region and well known as one of Poland's key hubs for winter sports. Regardless of commune size, awards went to those where local authorities were making successful efforts to popularise energy-efficient and environment-friendly technological solutions for local energy issues.
