In late February, various opponents of the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC), majority-owned by Canada-based Gabriel Resources, took their fight to the steps of the Slovakian office of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Members of Greenpeace had learned that top management personnel from Gabriel were meeting in Bratislava with Soknan Han Jung and Florin Banateanu from UNDP Romania.

"The meeting was about sustainable development plans for a project that the Romanian Science Academy, Hungarian government and European Parliament consider a serious ecological threat to the whole region," Greenpeace said in a statement.

Greenpeace sent an open letter to the UNDP, alleging that various communications between Gabriel and the development branch were being willfully withheld from the public and all stakeholders.

Zoran Stevanovic, a spokesman for the UNDP's Bratislava office, confirmed that talks between the two parties were taking place, but was unwilling at the time to disclose particulars.
