Acid spill prompts investigation

Feb. 5, 2009

Following an accident in which the Belgrade Beer Industry spilled 20 tons of acid, Serbia's Department for Eco-toxicology, under the auspices of the Public Health Institute, has begun an investigation into determining quantities of hazardous chemicals in the territory of Belgrade. In addition to the Petrohemija refinery, fertiliser factory Azotara in Pancevo, and the chemical industry in Baric, near Belgrade, there are approximately 70 industrial facilities which produce, use or store hazardous chemicals in the city center and/or residential areas of the Serbian capital.

Other hazardous facilities in Serbia include: the Duga paint and varnish industry in Dorcol, Fitofarmacija in Zemun, water utilities in Makis and Bele Vode, the Jugopetrol reservoirs in Cukarica, and NIS reservoirs in Ovca and Cukarica.
