Zvezda Helios, a paint and varnish firm located in Gornji Milanovac, has allegedly been dumping metal barrels and plastic containers filled with toxic waste for at least two years, according to
B92. Serbia's Republican Environmental Protection Inspectorate has therefore filed a complaint against Zvezda Helios, in addition to the company's general manager and environmental protection manager.
Suspected of having ignored necessary protection and security measures, Zvezda Helios' waste disposal practices have possibly endangered the lives of local citizens. Hazardous waste has reportedly spread over fields in the Gruza River Basin; the Gruza flows into a lake which is used to supply water to the city of Kragujevac.
