Recycling 'island' opens in Belgrade

June 17, 2009

As part of the 'Primary Waste Separation and Recycling' project, public utility company Gradska cistoca opened its first recycling island in Belgrade on June 16 — in Novi Beograd municipality. At the same time, the city is setting up 38 such islands in other locations throughout the Serbian capital. The islands will accommodate three standard types of waste disposal containers: paper, metal and plastic (PET packaging).

The goal of this initiative is to introduce EU standards of waste management, and to eventually install recycling islands in all Belgrade municipalities.

The new waste management system introduces waste separation at the point of creation, and should reduce capacity pressures at the city landfill in Vinca. Packaging waste collected at the recycling islands will be sent to recycling yards, currently in Ada Huja, and later to other locations.
