RTB Bor copper mine debuts new filters

June 27,2009

As part of the national "Let's Clean Up Serbia" campaign, Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulic activated two new filters installed at the RTB Bor copper mine's melting plant and factory for manufacturing of sulphuric acid.

By installing the pair of wet electro-filters sulphur dioxide air pollution at the RTB Bor plant will be reduced by 12 percent, as substance utilisation will grow by exactly by the same amount during copper processing. In an urgent effort to address severe air pollution in Bor, the Environmental Protection Fund and Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning allocated RSD 39 million (EUR 416,000) for the filter installation.

By end-summer, two more dry, electro-static filers will be installed: one in the melting plant and the other in the gas line leading toward the sulphur manufacturing plant. These measures are expected to increase sulphur-dioxide utilisation by more than 10 percent.

Outdated technology has made Bor is the most polluted city in the West Balkans, while its level of sulphur-dioxide concentration is the highest in Europe.
