The Ankara-based Anatolia News Agency reported last week that the Environmental Protection Agency for Special Areas (EPASA), a branch of the Turkish Environment Ministry, has officially joined with the General Directorate for Development of Agricultural Cultivation (TUGEM) to subsidise 14 organic farming projects in 14 specially designated agricultural areas identified as coming under threat from conventional farming, tourism and urbanisation.
In compliance with a protocol signed by EPASA and TUGEM, the subsidies will cover the cost of organic farm certification, training, and soil analysis for farming. According to TUGEM's general manager Ali Karaca, the programme will support 5,000 farmers in 57 provinces at a reported cost of 6.8 million Turkish lira (approx. EUR 3.4 million).
